PowerPriceHub uses a simple, reproducible formula to estimate appliance electricity use and cost.
The formula
Estimated cost = watts × hours of use ÷ 1,000 × electricity rate in USD per kWh.
Dividing watts by 1,000 converts watts to kilowatts. Multiplying by hours gives kilowatt-hours (kWh). Multiplying kWh by your electricity rate gives an estimated energy cost.
Use your own electricity rate
Electricity rates vary by state, utility, plan, season, and time of use. Enter the per-kWh rate shown on your bill instead of relying on a single national figure. If your bill includes several rates, use the rate that best matches the period you are estimating or calculate a blended rate from your bill.
What the estimate includes
- The appliance wattage you enter.
- The hours of use you enter.
- The electricity rate you enter.
Limitations
Results are planning estimates. Actual consumption can differ because equipment cycles on and off, operating conditions change, and the wattage on a label may represent a rated or maximum value. Estimates do not include fixed utility charges, taxes, demand charges, standby use, or changing rates unless you include them in the rate you enter.
Use the electricity cost calculator with numbers from your appliance and bill.
